6th 1990-1991
7th 1991-1992
First CD, I think was Nirvana – Nevermind, released September 24, 1991, probably purchased pretty soon thereafter.
Pearl Jam – Ten (August 27, 1991)
Not that I was necessarily a huge fan of grunge, but these two purchases represent the enormous influence of MTV during this era. These two bands were hyped greatly and mercilessly on MTV so naturally, these were amongst my first actual CD purchases. I’m pretty sure I may have purchased an odd cassette here or there, but this will definitely require more thought.
X-Clan – Xodus May 19, 1992 – Cassette
Also of great influence, The Source magazine – I would scour the shit out of this magazine for stuff that was off the beaten path.
EPMD – Business Never Personal (released July 28, 1992) Got into EPMD backwards, Das Efx – Dead Serious was the initiator (EPMD found/produced for Das Efx) “They Want Efx” was main single from Dead Serious.
Brand Nubian
I think this may have been when I purchased my first CD – Public Enemy – Fear of a Black Planet
Early days, lots of hip-hop, even then I had somewhat discerning tastes? Ice Cube, NWA,
Pete Rock & CL Smooth – Mecca and the Soul Brother June 9, 1992

Da Lench Mob – Guerillas in tha Mist September 22, 1992

Wu-Tang Clan – Enter the 36 Chambers November 9, 1993
Nas – Illmatic April 19, 1994 motherfucking classic.
Green Day – Dookie remember listening to at the time, did not understand the appeal (still do not understand the appeal of Green Day).
10th 1994-1995
Mobb Deep – The Infamous – April 25, 1995
11th 1995-1996
Started getting into Jazz, mostly prompted by access to 88.1 KKJZ radio station. Initially huge fan of John Coltrane and then moved outwards – Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, somewhere in here got really into Antonio Carlos-Jobim and Bossa Nova, Stan Getz, Astrud Gilberto.
12th 1996-1997
DJ Shadow – Endtroducing November 19, 1996
Bjork – Homogenic September 22, 1997 Had gotten into Bjork during this time period. Remember seeing video for “Oh so quiet” and thinking it was cool, but not really thinking anything too much for the music. Will have to think some more about impetus for fandom.
Got into The Cardigans during this period. Partly because of “Lovefool,” but really because of “Carnival.”
Fresh 1997-1998
Roni Size – New Forms October 28, 1997
Drum ‘n Bass
Amon Tobin somewhere up in here.
